SUMMARY:THE QUEEN AND I, LIBERATION
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES:\nSunday July 26th: 5 and 7:30PM\nMonday July 27
 th: 5PM\nTues-Wed 28th-29th: 5 and 7:30PM\nThurs 30th: 5PM\nFriday 31s
 t: 5 and 7:30\nSaturday 1st: 2:30PM\nSunday 2nd: 2:30 5 and 7:30\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nWhen Nahid Persson Sarvestani, an Iranian exile, set out to ma
ke a documentary about Farrah, the wife of the shah of Iran, she expec
ted to encounter her opposite. As a child, Persson Sarvestani had live
d in dire poverty, watching Farrah’s wedding as if it were a fairy t
ale. As a teenager, she joined the Communist faction of Khomeini’s r
evolution that deposed the shah, sending him and his family volleying
from country to country. When Khomeini betrayed his promise for democr
acy, imposing more violent measures than the shah had, Persson Sarvest
ani was also forced to flee.\n\nThirty years later, she needs key ques
tions answered and goes directly to the source. Surprisingly, Queen Fa
rrah welcomes her as a fellow refugee from their beloved homeland, gra
nting unprecedented access. Over the next year and a half, Persson Sar
vestani enters the queen’s world, planning to challenge the shah’s
ideology; instead, she must rethink her own. When Persson Sarvestaniâ
€™s prior opposition to the shah surfaces, the queen shuts down filmin
 g. Yet, in the struggle to understand each other’s experiences, an u
nlikely friendship has blossomed. Confronting Farrah about the shah’
s repression has become not only a political conflict but a personal o
ne, and Persson Sarvestani’s objectivity is shaken. In this gripping,
poignant consideration of subjectivity as truth, we learn that people
write history. And can also heal it. The Queen and I couldn’t be mo
re relevant today.\n\nSPECIAL SHORT FILM SCREENING BEFORE THE FEATURE:
\n\nLIBERATION\n\nIn 1979, the Shah of Iran was overthrown by the coun
try's Islamic\nRevolution. Forced into exile, he settled in an isolate
d mansion in\nCuernevaca, Mexico and watched as his empire collapsed o
n television. A\npowerful examination of dictatorship and its psycholo
gical effects on a man,\nLIBERATION explores a key turning point in Mi
ddle-East History and the\norigins of the Iran we know today.\n\n\nFIL
MMAKER Bio:\nLos Angeles natives Justin and Michael Younesi attended t
he University of\nSouthern California, where their work was awarded Th
e Barbara Corday\nScholarship, the Louis J. Favara Scholarship and the
Panavision New\nFilmmaker Award. Coming from a family in the fashion
business, they impose a\nstrong aesthetic vision on their projects, ma
ny of which explore historical\nand political events. In 2009, they we
