PANELISTS: SHARON ORECK, FLORIA SIGISMONDI & JENN NKIRU
Moderated by Tabitha Denholm, Founder of Women Under The Influence
We will explore the world of music videos from its inception in the 80s through the glory years of the 90s, and into a bright future with some of the women instrumental in establishing it as an art form. We will consider the thorny issues of representation, and understand the importance of having women at the helm. The unique power of the music video is in its ability to crystallize the cultural moment. Those of us making videos must ask ourselves, "How can I make timeless and relevant work in the cultures fastest moving industry?"
Our visionary panel includes Sharon Oreck, the legendary producer who was there when it all began, presiding over genre-defining work from legends like Madonna, Prince, Paula Abdul and beyond. Floria Sigismondi whose unmistakable visual style has been in demand from artists as ranging from Marilyn Manson to David Bowie since the early 90s. And Jenn Nkiru who recently took the internet by storm, reimagining blackness with her beautiful film, Rebirth is Necessary. In Jenns work we see that the world of music video is more vibrant, relevant and powerful than ever. The panel is hosted by Tabitha Denholm, music video director in her own right, and founder of Women Under The Influence, a community celebrating women in film.
