LIGHT NIGHTS: A new series at the Downtown Independent that sheds light on socially conscious films from around the world.

As a follow-up to last month's beautiful screening of I AM CUBA, Light Nights will host a special 50th anniversary screening of the seminal Oscar-winning film BLACK ORPHEUS (Orfeo Negro).

Directed by Marcel Camus, BLACK ORPHEUS is a cinematic adaptation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. Set during Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, Orpheus is a streetcar conductor and Eurydice a country girl who has just jilted her lover and is attempting to escape his wrath. From the moment of its first appearance, this bittersweet Afro-Brazilian romantic tragedy has charmed audiences the world over with its beauty, color and music. It played a major role in ushering the infectious bossa nova beat to the U.S. at the dawn of the modern civil rights movement.
